Dance conventions move fast. Between classes, dancers may only have a few minutes to change shoes, grab water, or eat a snack.

The last thing you want is to realize something important is missing.

Here's my dance convention packing list of essentials and easily forgotten extras to make the day run a little smoother.

Dance Convention Packing List: What to Bring

Dancewear and Shoes

  • Base dancewear: A comfortable leotard or two-piece set that works for multiple classes.

  • Easy outfit layers: Jazz skirts or shorts, baggy pants for hip-hop, or a cropped top that can be added or removed without a complete outfit change.

  • Warm-up layer: A sweatshirt or lightweight pullover for chilly ballrooms.

  • Dance shoes: Check the schedule for jazz shoes, ballet shoes, half soles, or sneakers.

Hair Essentials

  • Detangling brush: For quick fixes between classes.

  • Hair wax stick: Helps smooth flyaways without completely redoing hair.

  • Extra hair ties and bobby pins: Because these always seem to disappear.

  • Hair clips or accessories: Keep everything together in a small pouch.

Hydration and Energy

  • Refillable water bottle: Easy to open and grab during short breaks.

  • Electrolytes: An optional addition for longer, especially sweaty days when appropriate.

  • Quick snacks: Granola bars, pretzels, fruit, or applesauce pouches for energy between classes.

  • Lunch: Something more substantial if the convention runs all day.

  • Insulated lunch bag: Keeps food together and perishable items cool with an ice pack.

Just-in-Case Essentials

  • Bandages and blister pads: For minor scrapes or uncomfortable shoes.

  • Tissues and hand sanitizer: Small things that are easy to forget.

  • Personal medications: Bring anything your dancer may need

If your dancer becomes ill or dizzy, stop activity and get appropriate care.

Organization and Extras

  • Mesh zipper pouches: Keep shoes, hair supplies, and smaller items easy to find.

  • Permanent marker: Label water bottles, shoes, and other belongings.

Don't Forget Mom's Bag

  • Sweater or jacket: Hotel ballrooms can get cold.

  • Comfortable shoes: You'll likely spend plenty of time walking or standing.

  • Water and snacks: Don't pack everything for your dancer and forget yourself.

  • Charging cable and portable charger: Especially if you'll be there all day.
