The Summer Dance Fund: Why I'm Saving for Dance Season Before I Know the Costs

If you're a dance mom, you're probably focused on Nationals, summer classes, or simply enjoying a break from recital season.

The last thing you want to think about is next competition season.

I get it.

But after several years as a dance mom, I've noticed something.

The moms who seem the least stressed when competition season starts aren't necessarily spending less money.

They're just preparing earlier.

Here's my slightly controversial dance mom opinion:

Waiting for team placements, competition schedules, and fee sheets is not a financial strategy.

I may not know what next season will cost.

But I know it won't cost $0.

That's why I'm starting my Summer Dance Fund now.

Why Dance Moms Should Start a Summer Dance Fund Before They Have All the Answers

Right now, many of us don't know:

  • Team placements

  • Competition schedules

  • Convention dates

  • Travel plans

  • Team apparel requirements

We're waiting for information.

But while the details may be unknown, the expenses are not.

Dance shoes will need replacing.

Competition fees will show up.

Travel costs will happen.

There will be at least one expense that makes you say, "Wait, how much?"

Instead of waiting for those emails to arrive, I'm using summer to get ahead.

My Summer Dance Fund System

The system is simple.

Open a separate savings account.

Name it something you'll recognize, like:

  • Dance Season Savings

  • Competition Fund

  • Dance Expenses

Then set up an automatic transfer.

For me, that's $20 per week.

That's it.

No spreadsheets.

No complicated budget.

No trying to predict every single expense.

Just one small transfer happening automatically in the background.

Because let's be honest—if I have to remember to do it manually, there's a good chance I'll forget between work, dance, and figuring out what's for dinner.

Need Help Finding an Extra $20?

Before you tell yourself you can't save $20 a week, look at your subscriptions.

Seriously.

Is there one you're barely using?

A streaming service?

A monthly app?

A subscription box?

Cancel one and redirect that money into your Dance Season Savings account.

You probably won't miss it.

But Future You might be very thankful when competition fees arrive.

Another easy option?

Skip one convenience purchase each week.

One drive-thru run.

One impulse Target purchase.

One "add to cart" moment that somehow became $37.

You don't have to do it forever.

Just long enough to build a little cushion before the season starts.

Start a "Next Dance Season" Note Today

This might be the simplest tip in the entire article.

Open the Notes app on your phone.

Create a note called:

Next Dance Season

Now leave it there.

As you're traveling to Nationals, attending summer classes, or scrolling through dance mom Facebook groups, add things as they come up.

Maybe your list includes:

  • New jazz shoes

  • A garment bag

  • A portable fan

  • Team jacket

  • Competition makeup

  • Dance backpack

Most dance moms don't have a money problem.

They have a remembering-all-the-things problem.

This note solves that.

Use Prime Day Like a Dance Mom

Prime Day is not an excuse to buy random things because they're on sale.

Ask me how I know.

Instead, use your "Next Dance Season" note as a shopping guide.

Look for items you already know you'll need:

  • Bobby pins

  • Hair nets

  • Bun makers

  • Garment bags

  • Portable fans

  • Water bottles

  • Makeup organizers

The goal isn't spending more.

The goal is spending smarter.

It's to make next season feel a little less overwhelming.

Because competition season will get here faster than we think.

The fees will come.

The travel plans will happen.

The dance shoes will need replacing.

A few small steps today can help you feel more prepared tomorrow—and that's exactly why I'm starting my Summer Dance Fund now.
