Dance Mom Summer: Why It's My Favorite Season of the Year

You've heard of Hot Girl Summer.
Well, I'm having a Dance Mom Summer.
And honestly?
It's become my favorite season of the dance year.
Here's my slightly controversial dance mom opinion:
Not every summer activity needs to be about getting ahead for next season.
I know. That's practically a radical statement in some dance circles.
But after several years of competition dance, I've realized that summer is one of the few times we can enjoy dance without feeling like we're constantly chasing the next deadline.
What a Dance Mom Summer Actually Looks Like
A Dance Mom Summer isn't a summer where dance disappears.
Most of us still have classes, camps, intensives, conventions, private lessons, or Nationals on the calendar.
But the pressure feels different.
There aren't quite as many deadlines competing for space in your brain, which means dance gets to be about dancing again.
Instead of focusing on costumes, schedules, registrations, and the 473 other details that come with competition season, our dancers get to focus on growth. They can work on technique, try something new, and improve without worrying about scores.
And while our dancers are focused on growth, summer gives us a chance to think about our own growth too.
Your Dancer Isn't the Only One Growing
Summer is one of the few times I intentionally ask myself questions that have absolutely nothing to do with dance.
Questions like:
What book am I finally going to read?
Which friend makes me laugh so hard I can't breathe—and when are we getting together?
What hobby have I ignored for way too long?
What sounds ridiculously fun right now?

My First Dance Mom Summer Permission Slip
One thing I'm focusing on this summer is being more intentional.
Not more productive.
Intentional.
There's a difference.
That's why I'm introducing something I'm calling Dance Mom Summer Permission Slips.
Just small reminders that you're allowed to enjoy your summer too.
This week's permission slip is simple:
Take 10 minutes for yourself.
Not to fold laundry, answer emails, or organize the dance bag.
Just 10 minutes for you.
Maybe that's sitting outside with your coffee before everyone wakes up.
Maybe it's reading a chapter of a book.
Maybe it's taking a short walk.
Maybe it's listening to a meditation.
No tracking.
No challenge.
Just permission.
Because the season will still be there tomorrow.
But this summer?
You'll never get it back.
Why Every Dance Mom Summer Matters
Dance Mom Summer is a chance to enjoy dance without feeling like you're constantly racing to keep up. It's a chance to focus on growth, create memories, and remember that you're more than the person who manages the family calendar.
And if we're lucky, it's also a chance to discover a few things about ourselves before the next season begins.
Because a Dance Mom Summer isn't just about preparing for what's next.
It's about enjoying what's right now.
