Dance Mom Summer Permission Slip #2
Summer was supposed to slow down...
Summer is supposed to mean slower mornings, pool days, family vacations, and a little breathing room.
Unless you're a dance mom.
Then summer somehow becomes the busiest season of the year.
Nationals.
Packing.
Hotel reservations.
Team dinners.
Spirit days.
Costumes.
Laundry.Last-minute Amazon orders.
Trying to remember if you packed the backup tights...and the backup backup tights.
If you're anything like me, your brain has been running through every possible scenario.
"Did I pack enough snacks?"
"Do I need another portable fan?"
"Should I bring one more extension cord?"
"What if someone forgets deodorant?"
"Should I decorate the hotel door?"
"Wait...did I pack the solo costume?"
At some point, we stop preparing for Nationals and start chasing perfection.
So before you zip that suitcase closed, I want to hand you something.
Not another checklist.
Not another packing list.
Not another Amazon recommendation.
Something even more important.
Dance Mom Summer Permission Slip #2
You don't have to make Nationals perfect.
Read that again.
Your job isn't to create a perfect week.
Your job is to help create meaningful memories.
Those are two very different things.
The Pressure We Put on Ourselves
Can we talk about the invisible pressure dance moms carry?
It's not just getting everyone where they need to be.
It's feeling responsible for everyone enjoying the trip.
We want our dancers to have the best Nationals ever.
We want teammates to have fun.
We want the hotel room organized.
We want healthy meals.
We want enough sleep.
We want amazing photos.
We want everything to go according to plan.
That's a lot for one person to carry.
And somewhere along the way, social media convinced us that a "good" dance mom has:
✔ Matching team shirts
✔ Personalized gift bags
✔ Coordinated snacks
✔ Pinterest-worthy hotel decorations
✔ Every travel gadget ever invented
Those things can absolutely be fun.
But they're optional.
They are not what makes you a great dance mom.
What Your Dancer Will Actually Remember
Years from now, your dancer probably won't remember:
❌ Whether every outfit matched.
❌ Whether the hotel room door was decorated.
❌ Whether you packed twelve different snacks.
❌ Whether the suitcase had color-coded packing cubes.
But they'll remember...
❤️ You laughing together after a long day.
❤️ Swimming with teammates.
❤️ Celebrating after awards.
❤️ Late-night pizza in the hotel room.
❤️ Dancing in the hallway while waiting for the elevator.
❤️ You telling them how proud you were no matter what the judges said.
That's the stuff that lasts.
Not perfection.
Connection.
My Confession
Can I admit something?
I'm the dance mom friend who's always looking for an easier way—and sharing it when I find one.
I love researching.
I love finding products that solve problems.
I genuinely enjoy making packing easier.
But every once in a while, I have to remind myself that the easiest solution isn't another product.
Sometimes it's changing my mindset.
This is one of those times.
Because no Amazon order can deliver peace of mind if I'm carrying unrealistic expectations.
Trade Perfect for Present
Imagine two different moms at Nationals.
The first mom spends the entire week checking boxes.
She's constantly wondering what she forgot.
She's mentally planning tomorrow while living through today.
She's exhausted before awards even begin.
The second mom prepared well.
Not perfectly.
She forgot a couple of things.
Borrowed a few things.
Ordered pizza one night because nobody had the energy to cook.
Skipped an activity because everyone needed to recharge.
She laughed when things didn't go according to plan.
She was present.
Which mom do you think creates the memories her dancer will treasure?
Spoiler alert...
It has very little to do with how organized her suitcase was.
Here's Your Permission Slip
Before Nationals starts, I hope you'll give yourself permission to:
✓ Leave a few things unpacked if it means getting more sleep.
✓ Buy groceries that are easy instead of impressive.
✓ Order takeout without guilt.
✓ Borrow something instead of stressing because you forgot it.
✓ Skip comparing your trip to someone else's.
✓ Put your phone away once in a while.
✓ Sit by the pool.
✓ Cheer louder than anyone else.
✓ Hug your dancer after every performance.
✓ Remember why you're really there.
Nationals Tips for Dance Moms: What Really Matters
If I could give one of my biggest Nationals tips for dance moms, it would be this:
Your dancer doesn't need a perfect week.
They need a mom who's emotionally available enough to enjoy it with them.
The medals will eventually get packed away.
The costumes will get hung in the closet.
The score sheets will fade into memory.
But the way your dancer felt during Nationals?
That's what they'll carry with them.
So if you've been putting pressure on yourself to make every detail perfect...
This is your reminder to let some of that go.
Pack thoughtfully.
Plan ahead.
Do your best.
Then give yourself permission to enjoy the week you've worked so hard to make possible.
Because the goal was never perfection.
The goal has always been the memories.
And I have a feeling those memories are going to be pretty incredible.
